Auchengruith, at approximately 220 meters above sea level, offers views across to the Mennock Pass in the Lowther Hills. The road leading up from the hamlet of Mennock near Sanquhar weaves its way through the beautiful southern uplands up to Wanlockhead, Scotland's highest village at 1531 meters.
This spectacular area is popular with hillwalkers, cyclists and anyone who enjoys the open countryside. Buzzards, kites and maybe even a Golden Eagle can be seen wheeling overhead; the surrounding hills are dotted with sheep. Red squirrels live in the local ancient woodlands where bluebells abound.
Whatever the weather, you can be assured of a warm welcome at Auchengruith. In spring and summer the surrounding hills change almost daily as the bracken and ferns grow and the wild heather blooms. The glowing golds and coppers of autumn are spectacular. Winter can be harsh but majestic as the snow blankets the hills.
The Southern Uplands make up the southernmost part of Scotland, just north of the border with England, and runs from south-west to north-east. Ancient dry stone walls criss-cross the landscape and ruined dwellings tell of times long passed. This is an area of myth, legend and a fascinating history, evidence of which can be found everywhere. Take a good map, be well prepared for the weather and see for yourself how spellbinding this often overlooked area can be.
